After I cleaned out Google Reader of dead feeds of sites that I no longer followed or have not been updated/deleted; I noticed an improved loading time. Which I might have mentions in that post. Though, I don’t know if there’s a page to send suggestions and what not to Google for improvements to Google Reader. There is one thing I like to see added is to select multiple feeds at the same time and do a mass edit. I thought of like 5 to 10 feeds at a time, to un-subscribe from them or move to a common folder to remove at a later date.
Though if there’s a way to do a mass edit within Google Reader; would be nice its a wishful thinking type of product that would’ve helped. Or if there’s a program of some kind that would check if there are dead link’s in your Google Reader or in other RSS reader programs out there. If I was able to build something like I would have done it. Though I just don’t have the know how or knowledge to do that sort of thing.
later for now
Well I’ve finally moved hosting company’s for this site. I went from Yahoo! Web Hosting to WestHost. Its taken me at least 3 to 5 1/2 years to actually make the move. Partly trying to find a host that I could transition to and not knowing how to make such moves.
I’ve used Yahoo for so long – at first with business email then a couple of years later web hosting. I did that domain/web hosting packing together which I learned and heard over the years wasn’t a very good idea in any way. So now I have this domain and bhchinooks.com at independent domain register and have hosting with WestHost.
One thing that I’ve noticed since the move is that this site is loading faster than before while on Yahoo servers. While I had this site on Yahoo web hosting I’ve noticed that there were many “quirks” that developed which is hard to explain. Though the site seemed stable majority of the time – it was the odd weekend where this blog went “weird.” The last time this blog went “weird” on the June 4th weekend, so it was the “straw” that broke to proverbial camels back. Which gave me a “kick” on the backside to make the move.
Though there is other reason for the move – is that I’ve “out grown” what Yahoo offered on its web hosting site.
If I was running a site with no blog(s) or php scripts I might have stayed with Yahoo.
I looked around at other hosting companies but at the time when I signed up I was looking to pay for a couple of years at a time. Partly to “save some money” each year. At the moment I’m exploring my more options as for my current host goes. There will be an expanded explanation at a later time with the last statement – if you could understand what I just said.
Got a response from my hosting company, but then the way I worded the email to them wasn’t that good either. The problem that I’ve had over the July 4th weekend is that some how this site and a WordPress testing blog that I have on this site got screwed up so now both aren’t working well as they should have been.
The problem that I had over the June 4th weekend was a lot of connection error’s with the mysql server that I have with this hosting account. Though by the time the techs got to look at my account thing’s were generally stable with my blogs.
Problems with this blog might have started earlier than June 4th weekend – not sure though.
After what happened after the June 4th weekend with this blog I’m going to back up all the stuff I need to – like files, databases, and archive mail from the web-based email app.
Once I get things setup on my other host – I’ll post some thing here before I update the dns for the site and see how things go. Hopefully the move would be a smooth transition from one host to another.
In the process of moving stuff over to my other host I discovered that I had a problem with a php script that I made sometime back.
It’s on the links page of my site that’s not working well with my other host. Though it’s time that I would need to update the code and the database for it to work again. it’s going to take time to update the code since I haven’t been working with php on a daily basis or weekly basis.
Moving sites and dealing with this type of problems – would help me to get on top of things again. A php class may or may not help as a refresher – though doing a trail and error is a good way to learn to make things work.
Anyways I’ll post another update soon.
For those who are following this blog using the regular feed located at myjournal.peterlbrett.com/index.php/feed/, I found a plugin (located here) that would forward that feed to my Feedburner feed. i found this plugin when I added a Feedburner feed for the comments for this blog.
I’ve also been having trouble with servers since late Wednesday so the site was slow while using Firefox 2. But don’t know if anyone else was having trouble loading the site with other browsers.
bye for now…
Just a quick update about this blog. You might have noticed the change of name to this blog after changing the time settings for post’s etc., my blog title went from this “Peter’s Thoughts” to “Peter’s Thoughts” don’t know why the server (mysql and such) would that after having no problems with the way it was.
So I thought of using a different title, though I probably could do with out the url in the title but wanted to it to be descriptive with the new title. I may change it back to what it was after a while.
Don’t know why but recently I just want to write of using the web and the internet in general. What I mean is that the internet really no longer holds its appeal to me, or it doesn’t feel like “new.” Granted all I do now is to check email, use bloglines, Google Reader, and visit a couple other websites – including my own site.
Though for the last 2 1/2 to 3 years or so I’ve been using Bloglines which has been great to organize and centralize the things that I like to read the most. Such as entertainment news or follow tech sites. Although I have been using a new computer for the last year – which I use mainly for school work, and in part to work on my website which I haven’t updated that much recently which I should do soon.
I’m getting off track – sort of. It just seems like that I don’t want to have much to do with the web anymore – well not as much as I did like about 10 years ago when I started using the web and the internet.
One thing that I’ve been doing less and less is blogging and I think the problems is that what I want to say and it doesn’t come out right or just unable to put things into words.
bye for now…
For those who follow this blog I’m currently having a problem with the feeds and other things too with the host I have in some fashion. I won’t name names but currently I ‘m trying to get things corrected with the host.
Updates (hopefully) will come over the next several weeks or months.
Update: Things have been fixed for now, but going to see how things go for a while.
I found the following by the this Shang Liang’s blog post, which I found by the way of this aggregator for Adobe.
For some reason I would like to see the ability to save Yahoo News pages to either Yahoo Bookmarks or to del.icio.us. Though I could something like on a couple other sites with news stories but who knows if it would happen.
As you might notice the title of this post that I’m going to stop blogging for – well atleast until the end of summer. Its to the point where I want to reevaluate the direction of this blog and the rest of my site between now the end of August. THough I would try to finish updating a new look for my site over the next week to 10 days.
There happens to be a lot of stuff going on in my life now to the point where I want to go with my life and try to make “long term” plans. Like where I want to go to grad school and such.
But at this point I just don’t know what to do with my life. It seems like that I’ve been standing at a “fork in the road” in life for the last couple of years or at least for the last year anyway. And its also to the point where it feels like that I can’t even or alowed to change and become further independent from my family. Its just that I get pulled back into my family without much of choice regardless of what and where I want to do with my life.
Anyways, this is or should be my last posting to this blog for while – there might be one more post then that would be it for this blog for the rest of the summer.
Take care everyone
bye from Peter
